Four ABCUSD Schools Named 2023 California Distinguished Schools
January 9, 2023 - The California Department of Education announced that it is recognizing four schools in the ABC Unified School District as 2023 California Distinguished Schools. This program recognizes schools across the state for their work on closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance.
The four schools recognized are:
- Stowers Elementary
- Wittmann Elementary
- Cerritos Elementary
- Gonsalves Elementary
“I would like to congratulate these four schools on earning this recognition,” said Mr. Toan Nguyen, Interim Superintendent. “This achievement is due to our dedicated teachers, staff, and families who make up every school community.”
California Distinguished Schools are selected based on performance and progress in several areas, including assessment results, chronic absenteeism, suspension rates, and socioeconomic data. Seventy schools in L.A. County received this recognition.
“We are proud of the teams at Cerritos, Gonsalves, Stowers, and Wittmann elementary schools,” said ABCUSD Board President Mr. Brad Beach. “All of our schools are exceptional, and we are always excited to see them recognized.”
The California Distinguished Schools Program was created in 1985 to celebrate schools, districts, teachers, and staff for their hard work and success in supporting students. Elementary schools and middle and high schools are recognized in alternate years. So, awardees retain their title for two years.
